Buckyballs – Google Doodle and Amazing Desk Toy

Google have remembered the 25th anniversary of the ‘Buckyball’ with an interactive doodle on their homepage today.  While conducting research into Buckyballs and their inventor – renowned architectural modeller Buckminster Fuller, I discovered one of the coolest desktop toys I have ever seen in my life. Despite being such a cool theoretical and practical concept, lots of people are unaware of exactly what a Buckyball is.  Buckyballs belong to a class of molecules known as “Buckminsterfullerene”, which is also known as simply fullerene.  These molecules are made entirely of carbon and come in the form of either a hollow sphere, an ellipsoid, or a tube. The term buckyball is used to describe the spherical versions of these molecules, and they have a number of very interesting chemical, electronic, and technological applications.  Buckyballs have been used in a number of nanotechnology studies, and have greatly expanded the number of known carbon allotropes known to man.  And – as if that wasn’t enough – they are also the inspiration behind a cool and very additctive new desktop toy . Zoomdoggle have released their very own Buckyballs, a highly addictive toy made from a set of 216 powerful rare Earth magnets.  What makes this toy so cool is that these magnets can be shaped and arranged in unlimited ways, so there is no chance of you getting bored and no risk of getting get back to work any time soon. Whether in terms of groundbreaking science or simple desktop fun, buckyballs are so cool because of their flexibility in design.  There are already hundreds of different combinations of these interlocking pentagon/hexagon formations that have been found in the natural world, and with a little time on your hands, I’m sure that you can find some unique combinations of your own with the help of this new toy, which is only $29.95 and available from getbuckyballs.com Copyright

Apple Launch Music-centred Social Network – Ping

Apple’s new music-centred social network – Ping – has 1 million new users in only 2 days of operation.  However, while that number may appear impressive, it pales in comparison to the launch of related networks such as Google Buzz.  Ping has been designed as a feature of iTunes 10, and as such it keeps very much to the Apple “in-house” philosophy. There are a few reasons why this new Apple network is not living up to expectations, including a large spam problem and the lack of any real integration with Facebook.  Overall though, there seems to be a deeper problem with the initialisation of new social networks, and the lack of any real motivation for new users to make any effort. Google managed much better than Apple with its launch of Google Buzz , which had 10s of millions of users within the first 2 days of operation.  However, it too suffered from similar teething problems in the first few weeks.  While Google and Apple may be the big players within their own fields, it seems they are almost paralysed when trying to compete with big names like Facebook in the social networking arena. Ping is the latest example of another social network that is not particularly versatile, offering nothing really new but still requiring users to make an investment in learning and navigation.  New Ping users have to navigate their own way through this network, without much in the way of support or motivation. Steve Jobs has said he rejected the “onerous terms” for integration demanded by Facebook, but it looks – at least initially – like Ping is going to struggle without any Facebook support. I can’t help but think Apple’s attitude of ‘keeping everything in house’ is getting old and is showing signs of hurting them.  While there is no doubt Apple have been responsible for a number of innovations in recent times, the launch of Ping is yet another example that they can’t do everything by themselves – no matter how much they seem to want to.
